Sacred Heart School, Oshkosh

For many years, sacred heart school had many feet walking up and down the stairs, in and out of the classroom. It may seem that once the school closed, no more children would walk on those beautiful maple floors.
Not being familiar with a building, flashlight in hand, I was crawling through a dingy room in the basement of Sacred Heart. My allergies were overpowering and cobwebs lined my face; but from a room that appeared to be from the bowels of hell came treasures from heaven- a Beautiful hutch, but missing the glass doors. Inside the back wall of the janitor’s closet were those exact missing doors! After getting this piece and so many other treasures restored to original condition, they are one of a kind and truly beautiful.
The quality of construction throughout the roaring 20’s is second to none. Dense and flawless oak combined with old world craftsmanship can be found as we remove a door, with instructions written in German on a door jamb. Wavy glass that exhibits the authenticity of the building is yet another treasure that can be found in the windows and each door transom. These details often times are unnoticed when buildings are in day to day operation.
Salvaging of a building reduces the carbon footprint, saves on landfill space and provides superior material to conventional norms. Just from observing a few core materials salvaged from the building, the conversation of resources is staggering
An anticipated 150,000 brick, saving 30 metric tons of carbon
• 34,000 board foot of floor joists, trusses and other wood framing in building is equal to approximately 175 trees.
• The maple flooring being removed & repurposed saves approximately 75 maple trees
• 4 oak trees just on the 50 doors and casing, and stair cases.
This does not include all of the misc. items being salvaged throughout the building.
Though the school had fallen into a condition of disrepair, rest assured that the contents will be repurposed into neighboring homes, commercial buildings and residencies throughout the country. One particular order we are processing is a new home for a family in the Fox Valley. The existing hutches, wood moldings, bead board, stairs, doors, glass are being incorporated into this new home. The maple floors now go into house a family where children will walk up and down for many years to come. Allowing doors, flooring, or architectural antiques from the former school to be reutilized is a true resurrection of Sacred Heart!
